Canada Reverses TikTok Ban: Security Deal Reached
10 Mar
Summary
- Canada reversed its order for TikTok to close its Canadian division.
- New security measures will control Canadian user data access.
- TikTok has 16 million users in Canada, over 35% of the population.

Canada has reversed a previous order mandating the closure of TikTok's Canadian operations. In November 2024, the government directed ByteDance Ltd., TikTok's owner, to wind down its Canadian subsidiary. This decision was set aside in January following a legal motion, shortly after a diplomatic visit to China.
Industry Minister Melanie Joly stated that TikTok will now operate under new security commitments after a recent review. These include implementing 'security gateways' and privacy-enhancing technologies to control access to Canadian user data. The company will also bolster protections for minors, with an independent third-party monitor overseeing data-access controls.
TikTok, which boasts 16 million users in Canada, representing over 35% of the population, has also pledged to support Canadian content creators and cultural organizations. Globally, TikTok's operations have faced scrutiny, leading to entities like a US-based division with specific investors.
