Canada AI Minister Meets OpenAI CEO Over Safety

Canada's Minister for Artificial Intelligence is scheduled to meet with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman next week. The crucial discussion will focus on the company's plans to bolster safety protocols, especially in light of a recent tragic school shooting in British Columbia.

The Canadian government has emphasized the need for OpenAI to rapidly enhance its safety measures. Ottawa has indicated readiness to enact legislation if the company does not demonstrate a clear path forward. This stance comes after OpenAI's assertion that it did not initially contact police regarding an account linked to the alleged shooter, who had been banned from the platform.

In response to a letter from OpenAI's vice president of global policy, the company stated its commitment to establishing a direct liaison with Canadian law enforcement. They also plan to improve the detection of users violating their policy against violent activities. Minister Evan Solomon will meet with Altman to obtain further clarity and ensure these promises translate into tangible actions.

Solomon indicated he would also engage with other major technology platforms operating in Canada soon. The minister affirmed that all available options are being considered as the government assesses necessary future steps.
