Summary
- New BYD battery charges 10% to 70% in just five minutes.
- Ultra-fast charging requires specialized BYD Flash Charging stations.
- BYD aims to boost sales with rapid charging technology innovation.

Chinese automaker BYD has revealed a groundbreaking battery pack, the Blade Battery 2.0, capable of charging from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. This innovation aims to address a key concern for electric vehicle adoption: charging time.
BYD claims the battery can reach nearly 100% charge in approximately nine minutes. Even in frigid conditions, at -4˚F (-20˚C), the pack can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes. The new battery technology is set to debut in the luxury sedan, Yangwang U7.
A critical requirement for this ultra-fast charging is the use of BYD's new Flash Charging EV chargers, which deliver 1.5 megawatts of electricity. Without these specialized chargers, the five-minute charge time is not achievable.
This technology utilizes lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which BYD bets will lower EV costs by avoiding expensive metals like cobalt and nickel. While LFP is less energy-dense than other chemistries, BYD believes accelerated charging can make it viable for a wider range of EVs.
BYD has established 4,200 Flash charging stations across China and plans to add approximately 16,000 more by the end of 2026. These installations will also feature grid-scale batteries to manage power demand.
In the Yangwang U7, the battery is projected to offer over 621 miles of range under the China Light Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), translating to over 400 miles in real-world driving conditions.
