BYD Flash Charge: 9 Mins for 97% EV Battery
6 Mar
Summary
- New BYD chargers deliver up to 1500kW, tripling current UK speeds.
- EV batteries can charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.
- BYD plans 300 flash chargers in the UK within the next nine months.

Chinese automotive leader BYD has introduced its "Flash Charging" stations, marking a significant advancement for electric vehicle (EV) ownership. These new stations can charge an EV battery from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes, utilizing speeds up to 1,500kW, which is three times faster than the most powerful chargers currently available in the UK. BYD, the world's largest EV seller, has already deployed approximately 4,000 of these units in China and aims for 20,000 by the end of 2026.
The "Flash Charging" stations feature T-shaped structures that can be integrated into forecourts or function as standalone units for two vehicles. Each station operates at 1,500 amps and a 1,000-volt architecture, powered by on-site ultra-fast-discharge energy storage systems (ESS) to mitigate grid impact. These systems have been tested in extreme cold, charging an EV from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at -30 degrees Celsius.
