BYD Ditches Rotating Screens for Smoother Apps
21 Nov
Summary
- BYD is removing its signature rotating touchscreens from new models.
- The change aims to improve compatibility and performance with apps like Google and Apple CarPlay.
- The company noted that actual usage of the rotating feature was very small.

Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD is phasing out its distinctive rotating touchscreen technology from its upcoming vehicle models. This decision, announced recently, marks a significant departure from a feature that once set the brand apart in the UK and European markets. The rotating screens allowed for both portrait and landscape orientations, offering a unique customizability and improved viewing for navigation and applications.
The primary driver behind this discontinuation is BYD's strategic push to integrate third-party applications more seamlessly. According to Stella Li, vice president, the future models, beginning with the Atto 2 crossover, will feature fixed landscape screens optimized for Google and Apple CarPlay. She explained that the rotating design, while innovative, ultimately limits the smoothness and overall experience of these modern apps.
Despite the novelty and aesthetic appeal of the rotating displays, BYD has observed that their actual usage by consumers has been minimal. This insight has prompted the company to reallocate resources and focus on developing a more universally compatible user interface. BYD intends to continue its collaborations with major tech firms to ensure its vehicles offer the best possible digital experience.
