Blue Origin Races Moonshot Rival SpaceX
18 Feb
Summary
- Blue Origin aims to reach the moon before SpaceX, according to CEO.
- Employees are being reassigned from space tourism to lunar efforts.
- A lunar lander contract with NASA is valued at $3.4 billion.

Blue Origin is channeling its resources with a determined focus on lunar exploration, aiming to precede competitor SpaceX in reaching the moon. CEO Dave Limp stated the company will "move heaven and Earth" to achieve this goal.
In a strategic realignment, Blue Origin is reassigning personnel from its New Shepard space tourism operations. These skilled employees will now concentrate on accelerating lunar missions, with the New Shepard program paused for at least two years.
The company has a significant $3.4 billion contract with NASA to develop a lander for the Artemis program, which aims to send astronauts to the moon. Blue Origin also plans to send a spacecraft carrying cargo to the lunar surface as early as this year.
This intensified lunar push comes as NASA seeks to expedite its lunar landing capabilities. While SpaceX's Starship was initially designated for the first astronaut landing, NASA is now prioritizing whichever lander becomes available first, also encouraging Blue Origin to accelerate its development.
Blue Origin recently debuted its New Glenn orbital rocket and demonstrated successful vertical landings. The next New Glenn launch is anticipated in late February or early March. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently praised Blue Origin's advancements at a Florida launch complex.
