Bitdefender VPN: Hidden Changes Revealed

Bitdefender's Premium VPN has seen substantial updates in its 2026 applications, with changes not fully detailed on its product page. The VPN now resides within the primary Bitdefender application, featuring an altered protocol menu and a new partner for managing connections, signaling a departure from its previous iterations.

Security features include AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, and DNS/IP leak protection. Advanced features like Scramble for traffic disguise and an App Traffic Optimizer are available, though some, like website split tunneling, have known issues when using the recommended WireGuard protocol.

While Bitdefender is based in Romania, outside major surveillance alliances, its no-logs policy is supported by an unverified audit. Connection data processing is handled by IPVanish, and the privacy policy mentions collection of device IDs and IP addresses for connection establishment and Wi-Fi alerts.

Performance tests show consistent speeds on nearby servers, losing under 10% of download speed. However, distant servers showed a more significant speed reduction, averaging a 28% loss. The VPN successfully unblocked major Netflix libraries and services like BBC iPlayer and Hulu, but struggled with smaller libraries and censorship-heavy regions like China.

As a standalone product, its recommendation is conditional. It excels for existing Bitdefender antivirus users, offering convenient auto-connect rules and secure connections. However, for those seeking robust censorship resistance, extensive device support (like Linux or routers), or verifiable privacy audits, other standalone VPNs might be preferable.
