Birdbuddy introduced its newest line of smart bird feeders on Thursday, featuring AI-driven bird-species detection at their lowest prices ever. The highlight is the Birdbuddy Nook, priced from $99, which includes AI detection capabilities without any subscription fees.
This affordable Nook model boasts a 2K resolution camera supporting both portrait and landscape views, alongside a 3.8-cup birdseed capacity. It's motion-activated but can record for extended periods during high activity. Users receive alerts and species identification directly through the Birdbuddy app on their phones.
The Nook is available in a standard version for $99 and a solar-panel-equipped model for $159, which is recommended for continuous battery charging. A larger Birdbuddy Home model, with a 6-cup capacity, is also available for $219.
For optimal placement, feeders should be situated 4 to 10 feet from shrubs or trees to ensure bird safety from predators while deterring squirrels. An ideal pole height is 5 to 6 feet. Squirrel deterrence can be enhanced using safflower seeds or suet, avoiding corn or peanuts.
The AI identification system analyzes snapshots captured by the camera, comparing bird shape, color, and markings against trained species data. A stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for the on-phone analysis. While occasional misidentification may occur, the system has shown self-correction capabilities.
