Summary
- Audacity 4.0 introduces a fresh dark mode interface option.
- Non-destructive editing and clip grouping are now expanded.
- New tools offer sample-level editing and clip cutting.

Audacity Version 4.0 was released today, marking the most substantial update since Version 3.0. The new version introduces a redesigned interface, including an optional dark mode and colored audio clips, offering a more modern aesthetic while preserving the classic look as an option.
Significant enhancements have been made to editing workflows. Non-destructive editing is now greatly expanded, allowing for overlapping clips and simultaneous trimming of multiple clips. A new splitting tool, similar to those found in other creative software, enables one-click clip cutting.
Advanced features like an envelope tool for editing gain and other parameters in real-time have been added, alongside the ability to edit down to the sample level. These updates bring Audacity closer to the functionality of professional DAWs, such as Ableton Live and ProTools, but remain free.
