75+ Actors Test Auckland's New Underground Train Network

Auckland's emergency services have recently concluded extensive testing for the city's new underground train network, the City Rail Link (CRL). Over 75 actors participated in these crucial drills, simulating a variety of emergency scenarios to prepare police, paramedics, and firefighters. These exercises aimed to ensure a seamless response when the CRL opens its doors to the public in three weeks, on Sunday, September 13.

The rigorous testing program involved 15 distinct emergency exercises. Scenarios included train derailments, station fires, and mass evacuations, all designed to mimic real-life incidents. Each drill saw the participation of more than 300 volunteer passengers, whose diverse needs were reflected to provide realistic conditions. This comprehensive preparation is vital for the CRL, described as unique within New Zealand's rail infrastructure.

Officials expressed confidence in the CRL's readiness following the successful testing. The program examined frontline responses and underlying support systems, such as ventilation, alarms, and control room operations. This collaborative effort between emergency services and rail partners ensures that Aucklanders will be well-supported. The unique underground environment, with tunnels reaching depths of over 40 meters, presented specific challenges for access, evacuation, and communication, requiring specialized planning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Hato Hone St John also emphasized the importance of these exercises. Personnel familiarized themselves with the new underground environment, practicing coordinated responses. The extensive testing builds upon previous exercises involving over 1,400 volunteers, confirming the operational readiness of the City Rail Link for its imminent public opening.
