Europe's Space Return Capability Gets Major Funding Boost
23 Apr
Summary
- Atmos Space Cargo secured over $30 million in Series A funding.
- Funding will enable three operational reentry missions for Phoenix 2.
- New funding also supports development of larger Phoenix 3 spacecraft.

Atmos Space Cargo has secured 25.7 million euros ($30.1 million) in Series A funding to propel its reentry vehicle missions and spacecraft development. This significant investment, led by European funds, will enable the company to conduct three operational missions with its Phoenix 2 spacecraft.
Each Phoenix 2 vehicle is designed to carry up to 100 kilograms of payload for durations ranging from hours to months. Following its mission, the spacecraft will deploy a large inflatable heat shield for reentry and splashdown. The first mission, Phoenix 2.1, is slated for the second half of 2026, carrying research equipment. Subsequent missions are planned to follow roughly six and five months later.
The company is also initiating work on a larger reentry vehicle, the Phoenix 3, capable of carrying up to 1,000 kilograms. A test flight for this larger spacecraft is anticipated for late 2028 or early 2029. Furthermore, Atmos has launched Atmos Works, a business unit focused on serving European government and defense customers with secure and sovereign return capabilities.
This strategic funding round and development plan aim to establish Europe's first routine orbital return infrastructure, fostering independent access to and return of materials, data, and hardware from orbit. Investors recognized the dual-use nature of Atmos's technology, highlighting its importance for a robust European space industrial base.
