The Asus ROG Xreal R1 AR glasses represent an ambitious leap in augmented reality gaming technology, offering an unprecedented 240Hz refresh rate. This feature, enabled by a special dock for PC connectivity, promises exceptionally smooth gameplay, a first for AR glasses. Despite the fluid visual experience, this high performance is achieved through compromises, including a halved vertical resolution and persistent screen tearing.
These premium AR glasses are priced at $849, targeting serious gaming enthusiasts willing to invest in cutting-edge technology. The user experience also presents some drawbacks, such as a more cumbersome firmware update process compared to previous Xreal models and awkward menu interactions when using the PC dock. While the glasses offer a visually impressive simulated display and comfortable design, the substantial cost and fidelity trade-offs raise questions about their overall value proposition.
