AST Launch Pace Crucial for 2026 Satellite Goal
5 Mar
Summary
- AST aims to deploy 45-60 satellites by the end of 2026.
- The company plans initial commercial service in key markets.
- Vertical integration is critical for AST's constellation success.

AST, a satellite-broadband provider, is gearing up for its first launch on Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket in the coming weeks. The company's goal is to place 45 to 60 satellites into orbit by the end of 2026, enabling initial commercial service in select markets. Currently, AST has six satellites operational, with plans for additional launches every one to two months on average.
The company faces a challenge in reaching its target number of satellites by year-end, given the current launch cadence. AST is increasing satellite production to six units per month. President Scott Wisniewski emphasized that vertical integration in manufacturing is crucial for building the constellation efficiently, stating that a proprietary ASIC upgrade supporting 120Mbps downloads per coverage cell is slated for production around mid-year. A completed constellation of 90 satellites is anticipated in 2027.
Meanwhile, AST continues to secure coverage deals with wireless carriers globally. Recent partnerships include Telus in Canada and Orange in France. While competitors like SpaceX are also advancing direct-to-phone services and exploring space-based data centers, AST believes its ability to provide power affordably in space positions it competitively.
