Army Brigade Gets Battlefield AI Comms Upgrade
19 Nov
Summary
- 16 Air Assault Brigade to receive advanced battlefield communications.
- New system uses MPU5 radios and smartphones for real-time data.
- Equipment tested in demanding jungle conditions in Belize.

The 16 Air Assault Brigade is set to receive advanced communication technology designed to provide a significant advantage on the battlefield. This new system will allow soldiers to communicate seamlessly with commanders, regardless of distance, and share critical information in real-time. The equipment, which connects MPU5 radios to smartphones, facilitates the transmission of messages, video, and precise enemy location data.
The brigade's 216 (Parachute) Signal Squadron has already rigorously tested the new system in the demanding tropical environment of Belize. This extensive evaluation in the jungle, known for its challenges to electronic equipment, has provided confidence in the technology's reliability. The system features a 'self-healing' network capability to maintain connectivity even if communication links are disrupted.
Set to be implemented in early 2026, this upgrade is anticipated to enhance understanding, expedite decision-making, and improve overall planning for the brigade. Officers believe the technology will make the unit more lethal by significantly boosting situational awareness, while also allowing soldiers to carry less equipment into the field.
