AR Greeting Cards: Phone Wins Over Headset

Summary
- Phones are better for interactive AR experiences than headsets.
- New AR app Pixi sends interactive characters via messaging apps.
- On-device AI enables Pixi characters to recognize emotions and environment.

Mark Drummond, who worked on Apple's Vision Pro, suggests that mobile phones are better suited for interactive augmented reality experiences than headsets. He highlights that while Vision Pro is impressive, its isolating nature makes phones ideal for shared AR moments.
Drummond has developed Pixi, an iPhone AR app launching soon, designed for mobile-first storytelling. Pixi allows users to send personalized AR greeting cards featuring interactive characters and scenarios via iMessage or WhatsApp. These characters can react to viewers' emotions and surroundings using on-device AI.
While current AR apps offer basic interactions, Pixi's use of AI for facial recognition and environment analysis promises more sophisticated engagements. Drummond envisions future applications where AR characters can interact with specific objects in a user's environment, enhancing personalized greetings and messages.
Despite the Vision Pro's technological advancements, its high cost and limited adoption present barriers. Drummond argues that even future AR glasses will likely serve as secondary devices, with phones remaining the primary platform for complex AR applications due to their processing power and constant availability.
