Aqara U400: Apple's Home Key Unlocks Future

The Aqara Smart Lock U400, priced at $270, ushers in a new era of convenience with its robust support for Apple's Home Key feature, enabling hands-free unlocking. This smart lock leverages ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, offering a more precise and secure automatic entry experience compared to previous methods.

Designed for broad compatibility, the U400 works with any smart home ecosystem thanks to its Matter support and Thread connectivity, eliminating the need for a specific hub. It offers multiple unlocking methods, including a keypad, fingerprint sensor, NFC, and physical keys, ensuring flexibility for users.

The U400's UWB-based Home Key feature, enhanced in iOS 18, aims for seamless unlocking as users approach. While consistent hands-free operation depended on device proximity and type, it proved highly reliable with an Apple Watch, unlocking precisely when the user reached for the handle.

Installation is straightforward, similar to other smart locks, taking about 10 minutes. The lock is powered by a USB-C rechargeable battery pack, with Aqara estimating up to six months of life on a full charge. Emergency power can be supplied via an external power bank through its USB-C port.

For Apple Home users, the U400's advanced features, especially UWB-driven hands-free unlocking, make it a top contender. Android users may need to wait for wider Aliro standard adoption for similar conveniences, as UWB support is not yet available for their devices.
