Apple Partners Alibaba for Exclusive China AI

Apple has developed a unique large language model specifically for the China market, marking a departure from its typical reliance on third-party AI models. This proprietary AI was created in partnership with Alibaba Group, leveraging the Chinese tech giant's support and training capabilities. This initiative is seen as a strategic move to gain greater control over the AI experience in China, Apple's most competitive overseas market, where it faces strong competition from local brands like Huawei.

The development follows a lengthy regulatory process, culminating in the Cyberspace Administration of China's registration of Apple's generative AI service. This clearance paves the way for Apple Intelligence features to be available on iPhones in China for the first time. However, the emergence of Apple's self-trained model suggests a more complex, dual-track approach to AI deployment.
