Apple UK Enforces Age Verification for Services
25 Mar
Summary
- Apple now requires UK users to prove they are 18+.
- Age can be verified via credit card or ID scan.
- Ofcom praised Apple's proactive child safety measures.

Apple has implemented new age verification requirements for users in the UK as part of its iOS updates. To access specific services or features, individuals must now prove they are at least 18 years old. Users can complete this verification process through their device settings by linking a credit card or scanning a form of identification.
For users who have maintained an Apple account for some time, the company may use an existing payment method on file to confirm age eligibility. As a default measure, Apple is automatically activating its Web Content Filter and Communication Safety features for all users under 18 and for anyone who has not yet verified their age. These integrated tools can restrict access to certain websites and flag inappropriate image or video content.
Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has welcomed Apple's decision, noting that it exceeds the requirements set by the region's Online Safety Act. The regulator commended Apple's initiative in enhancing child protection on devices, emphasizing that the flexibility of their rules encourages innovation in age assurance and strengthens the safeguards established by the Online Safety Act.
