- Product launch postponed due to ongoing AI development challenges.

Apple Inc. is facing significant delays in its product roadmap, primarily stemming from challenges in its artificial intelligence development. The company has postponed the launch of its long-anticipated smart home display, codenamed J490, until later this year.
Originally slated for a spring 2025 release, the smart display's debut has been repeatedly pushed back due to the critical dependence on a revamped Siri digital assistant. This assistant, a core component of the device's user interface, has encountered further development setbacks, causing Apple to reschedule the smart home device's release.
The smart display, designed to function as a central AI hub for the home, features a 7-inch screen and facial recognition capabilities for personalized user experiences. It is now anticipated to launch around September, coinciding with the expected completion of the new Siri features.
Apple is also developing other AI-powered products like pendant devices and camera-equipped AirPods, which are scheduled for release after the updated Siri is finalized. The company aims to integrate all new Siri features with the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro launch in September.
The smart home display will run on a variation of tvOS 27, with the hardware featuring a silver aluminum casing and a USB-C port. This device is the first in a series of planned Apple home products, with a larger version and a security sensor also in development.
This strategic move into the smart home market positions Apple several years after competitors like Amazon and Google. However, the company aims to leverage its extensive user base of over 2.5 billion to capitalize on its existing ecosystem.
