Apple Private Relay Flawed: IP Address Leaks
5 Aug
Summary
- Private Relay feature in Safari has discovered flaws.
- Researchers created a website to test for IP leaks.
- This issue affects iCloud+ subscribers using Safari.

A privacy feature from Apple, Private Relay, designed to obscure user IP addresses in Safari, has been found to contain vulnerabilities. Researchers Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk revealed these flaws, noting they stem from three issues within Apple's WebKit browser engine.
They have launched a website allowing users to verify if their IP address is being exposed, a function TechCrunch confirmed as operational. Private Relay is exclusive to iCloud+ subscribers and operates only within the Safari browser, differing from system-wide VPN protections.
The researchers opted not to report the findings directly to Apple due to past negative experiences with the company's response to similar issues. They have implemented safeguards in their own private browser, Psylo, to prevent IP leaks.
