Apple's Price Hike: RAMageddon or Chip Costs?
25 Jun
Summary
- Apple increased prices on iPads, Macs, and more due to rising memory costs.
- The budget MacBook Neo saw a $100 price increase, now starting at $699.
- Apple cited 'RAMageddon' but chip production costs may also be a factor.

Apple announced significant price increases across many of its products on Thursday, attributing the hikes to rising component costs for memory and storage. This surge in prices is reportedly driven by high demand from AI data centers, a phenomenon termed 'RAMageddon.' The price adjustments affect a broad range of devices, including iPads, Macs, and the Apple TV, though the iPhone and Apple Watch appear to be exceptions.
The budget-friendly MacBook Neo, introduced just a few months prior, has been impacted by a $100 price increase. It now starts at $699 for the base model, with a student discount bringing it to $599. The step-up model with increased storage also saw a $100 rise, now priced at $799 ($699 with education discount).
While Apple points to RAMageddon as the primary cause, speculation suggests that increased manufacturing costs for new A18 Pro chips may also contribute to the price hikes. Apple's statement indicated an unprecedented increase in component prices, necessitating these broader price adjustments across its Mac and iPad lines.
Other Mac models also experienced substantial price increases. The MacBook Air saw a $200 rise, with the 13-inch now starting at $1,299 and the 15-inch at $1,499. MacBook Pro models faced even steeper increases, with the 14-inch starting at $1,999 and the 16-inch at $2,999. Desktop Macs, including the iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Studio, also saw price hikes ranging from $200 to $1,300.
