Apple May Lock Your iPhone Over Missed Payments
23 Jul
Summary
- New iOS beta code hints at 'Restricted Mode' for iPhones.
- Missed payments could lock down devices, limiting app access.
- Feature aims to prevent resale or parting out of financed phones.

A recent iOS 27 beta version contains code that could enable Apple to place financed iPhones into a 'Restricted Mode' if payments are missed. This finding aligns with reports of a new 'Apple Upgrade' financing initiative from the company.
If activated, this 'Restricted Mode' would reportedly disable most applications, with exceptions for basic functions such as the Phone app, Settings, and the App Store. The system, termed 'App Managed Features,' is designed to allow financing partners to continuously verify the payment status of devices.
Further code suggests a 'Partner Finance Lock' feature, intended to prevent users from erasing, selling, or disassembling restricted devices for parts. While integrated with the Find My service, this lock reportedly does not grant financing partners access to the device's location information.
It is important to note that these features are currently in a beta stage for iOS 27. Therefore, the 'Restricted Mode' and related functionalities could be altered or removed before the official release of the operating system. The 'Apple Upgrade' program has also not been officially announced by Apple.
