CarPlay's AI Upgrade: Voice Chat, No Wake Words
19 Feb
Summary
- CarPlay will support conversational AI via iOS 26.4.
- AI in CarPlay will not feature wake words for activation.
- AI responses in CarPlay will be voice-only, no text or images.

Apple is enhancing CarPlay with conversational AI capabilities, expected to arrive with the iOS 26.4 update in March. This new feature will allow AI companies to integrate interfaces enabling drivers to interact with AI assistants.
However, the implementation includes notable limitations. Drivers will need to manually activate AI applications using dashboard controls, as wake words will not be supported. This design choice aims to maintain driver focus and minimize distractions while using the system.
Furthermore, AI interactions within CarPlay will be strictly voice-based. Unlike typical chatbot experiences, these systems will not display text or images as responses. Additionally, the AI will be prohibited from controlling vehicle functions, the iPhone, or connected devices, restricting its utility to conversational tasks. The new guidelines emphasize that these AI applications are intended for general conversation, such as brainstorming or casual chat. They explicitly warn against using them for sensitive matters like medical diagnoses, financial advice, or therapy, ensuring they remain a tool for engagement rather than critical decision-making.
