Apple's AI News Push: History of Errors?

Less than two years after a significant misstep with its AI-powered notification summaries, Apple is reportedly negotiating licensing deals with news publishers to provide up-to-the-minute information through Siri. This new initiative aims to enhance its AI assistant with real-time news content, a venture potentially backed by a nine-figure budget.

The previous iteration of Apple's AI feature, launched in late 2024, generated numerous false news alerts. These inaccuracies included claims about public figures and events, such as reporting a tennis player had come out and was Brazilian (he is Spanish), or that a darts player had won an unplayed final. These errors, which continued for months, eventually led Apple to temporarily disable the feature, later reintroducing it with a prominent warning.

Despite these past issues, Apple is now reportedly pursuing multiyear content agreements with publishers. The financial terms are expected to vary based on content usage, indicating a substantial investment in this AI-driven news strategy.
