Apple Abandons Mac Pro Upgrade, Shifts Focus to Mac Studio
17 Nov
Summary
- Mac Pro line "on the back burner" and "largely written off" internally
- No clear sign of an M5 Ultra Mac Pro model in development
- Apple instead focusing on future Mac Studio as "present and future" of pro desktops

According to a recent report, Apple's Mac Pro desktop line is unlikely to receive a new model in 2026. The tech giant has reportedly put the Mac Pro "on the back burner" and "largely written off" the product internally.
The Mac Pro hasn't seen an update since 2023, leading some to speculate a new model might arrive next year. However, sources say Apple has cancelled its plans for both a new Mac Pro and the development of an M4 Ultra chip that was intended to power it.
Instead, the company is now focusing its efforts on the Mac Studio, which it sees as the "present and future" of its professional desktop strategy. The Mac Studio, first launched in 2022, has received regular updates, with the latest refresh coming in March 2025.
The top-end 2025 Mac Studio model, powered by an M4 Max chip, has received positive reviews, with PCMag praising its "powerful, versatile compact" design and "strong balance of performance and value for most professional users."
With no clear sign of an M5 Ultra Mac Pro in the works, it appears Apple has shifted its attention and resources to the Mac Studio line, signaling a significant change in the company's professional desktop strategy.
