Anthropic Restricts Claude Usage on External Apps
5 Apr
Summary
- Claude Pro and Max subscribers can't use credits via third-party tools.
- Anthropic cites cost concerns and engineering constraints for the change.
- The policy impacts OpenClaw and will expand to other tools soon.

Anthropic has implemented new restrictions on the usage of its Claude chatbot through third-party AI tools, beginning April 4, 2026. Subscribers of Claude Pro and Max can no longer use their allocated credits via frameworks such as OpenClaw. While technically allowed to continue using these tools, users now face a separate billing system for additional usage.
Company representative Boris Cherny explained that the decision stems from cost concerns, noting that existing subscription plans were insufficient for the high usage demands of these external applications. He emphasized that Anthropic is a proponent of open source but cited engineering constraints as the primary driver for this policy shift. This restriction, currently targeting OpenClaw, is slated for broader implementation across other third-party tools shortly.
This development follows the creator of OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, joining OpenAI in February. The move by Anthropic impacts a tool that had a close relationship with its LLMs since its debut in late 2025. Separately, OpenAI recently ceased its AI video generator Sora, citing a need to reallocate resources toward areas like 'world simulation research.'
