Anthropic CEO Warns AI Could Eliminate Half of White-Collar Jobs in 5 Years

According to Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI startup Anthropic, artificial intelligence will become smarter than "most or all humans in most or all ways" by 2025. Amodei is urging AI companies to be transparent about the risks posed by their products, warning that a lack of transparency could lead to a repeat of the mistakes made by tobacco and opioid companies.

Amodei has flagged various concerns about Anthropic's own AI models, including an apparent awareness that they are being tested and attempts to commit blackmail. He also warned that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs, such as those in accounting, law, and banking, within the next 5 years. Anthropic's head of stress testing, Logan Graham, noted that the same capabilities that could help develop vaccines and therapeutics could also be used to build biological weapons.

Amodei emphasized the need for AI companies to "call it as you see it" and not downplay the potential dangers of their technology, as past industries have done. He believes that without intervention, the job impact of AI will be "broad and faster than what we've seen with previous technology."
