Android Phones Now Tap to Share Files
13 Aug
Summary
- New Quick Share feature allows phones to tap for file exchange.
- Feature mirrors Android Beam, offering modern contact sharing.
- Rolling out on Pixel, coming to Samsung and other devices.

Google has reintroduced a file-sharing capability for Android devices, reviving the concept of Android Beam with a modern "Tap to Share" feature. This enhancement to Quick Share allows users to transfer contact information, files, photos, videos, and links by simply tapping their phones together.
Both devices must have Quick Share and NFC enabled, be unlocked, and have their screens facing up while overlapping. Users can select specific contact fields to share or choose content like photos and links. Google advises that thick phone cases might interfere with the NFC connection. Received content is stored in a dedicated Quick Share folder within the Files app.
The "Tap to Share" feature is currently being deployed on Pixel devices running Android 17 and higher, beginning with Pixel 6 models and newer. Samsung devices will receive the update next, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold, the 8 Ultra, the Fold 8, and the Flip 8. Google plans to make this functionality available on a wider range of Android devices by the close of 2026.
