Google Adds 24-Hour Delay to Android App Sideloading
26 Aug
Summary
- Android now requires a 24-hour waiting period to enable sideloading.
- Users must confirm they are not being coerced into sideloading apps.
- This new process, called Advanced Flow, aims to prevent scam coercion.

Google has introduced a significant change to how Android users can sideload applications, requiring a 24-hour waiting period and explicit confirmation that the user is not being coerced. This new security measure, termed "Advanced Flow," is designed to combat scams that exploit urgency and threats to trick individuals into installing malicious software.
The process begins with enabling the ability to sideload, followed by authenticating with a screen lock and confirming resistance to coercion. After these initial steps, users must restart their phone and observe a mandatory 24-hour waiting period.
Once the waiting period concludes, users can revisit the developer options to enable installation from unverified developers, choosing between a seven-day period or an indefinite setting. Opting for the seven-day re-enablement bypasses the waiting period for subsequent activations.
Users are still advised to exercise extreme caution, downloading APK files only from reputable sources like Uptodown, APKMirror, or F-Droid, and verifying developer legitimacy. After installing an app, it is crucial to re-enable "Advanced Protection" in the device settings for continued security.
