Google has released Android 17 and its companion smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 7. This latest version, initially available on Pixel devices, is accompanied by a "Pixel Drop" featuring advanced AI models. Key AI integrations include Lyria 3 for music generation, Gemini Omni for conversational video editing, and speech-to-translation tools powered by AudioLM.
The "Pixel Drop" also brings enhanced device interoperability and user-centric features. Android Quick Share will now work with Apple's AirDrop on compatible Pixel devices. Users can record personalized outgoing audio messages for missed calls, and the "Take a Message" feature is expanding globally. Parental controls and security have been bolstered with "Mark as Lost" and Live Threat Detection.
Wear OS 7 enhancements include emergency detection for Pixel Watch, automatically contacting services in case of accidents or falls. Smartwatches will also see improved live app updates mirroring from phones and better integration with future Google hardware like AI glasses. Future Wear OS updates this summer will introduce more Gemini Intelligence features, including personalized widget creation and "Personal Intelligence" by connecting Google apps and chat history.
