Anbernic has unveiled its new RG Rotate handheld, a device designed to revive the pocketable retro gaming experience with an innovative swiveling screen. This Android-based console features a 3.5-inch LCD with a 720 x 720 resolution, offering a unique take on the classic Game Boy-like form factor.
The device is powered by a Unisoc Tiger T618 octa-core CPU paired with 3GB of RAM. This configuration suggests capabilities for emulating games from systems like the original PlayStation and Nintendo 64, potentially extending to the GameCube era.
The RG Rotate will be available in two finishes: a lighter 167g black ABS plastic version and a heavier 204g silver CNC aluminum model. Both are designed to be thinner than Anbernic's previous clamshell devices, though the 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio games will display with black bezels.
Anbernic is positioning the RG Rotate as a versatile device, hinting at its use as an iPod or even a phone alternative for commutes. It supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5. However, users will need a USB-C adapter for audio due to the absence of a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device includes a screen protector in the box, acknowledging potential concerns about the exposed screen.
Pricing for the RG Rotate starts at $88 for the black model and $108 for the silver version. Early bird discounts of $5 and $8, respectively, will be available for the first three days post-launch. Both models are scheduled to go on sale on May 11.
