Lisbon-based EV startup Amble is introducing the Amble One, a street-legal buggy designed to redefine urban mobility. Developed by alumni from Apple and Audi, this compact electric vehicle prioritizes a "downgrade" in speed and size, challenging the automotive industry's focus on performance. Its neo-retro design is intentionally minimalist, featuring an open-air body, folding seats, and durable materials suitable for off-road paths.
The Amble One is powered by a 15 kW motor and an 11kWh battery, achieving a top speed of 40 mph and a range of up to 62 miles. Weighing under 450 kg to comply with European L7e quadricycle regulations, it targets short trips, aiming to be a household's second vehicle. The company is initially focusing on fleet sales to hospitality operators.
Reservations for the Amble One are now open with a $100 deposit, targeting deliveries in 2028 with a starting price of $25,000. Amble has already secured over 1,000 reservations. While headquartered in Lisbon, manufacturing will be handled by a contract manufacturer, with initial exports to the U.S. planned before potential American production.
The company sees potential competition from other micro-cars and golf cart-like offerings, but believes its focus on thoughtful design and a smaller vehicle appeals to drivers seeking an alternative to larger SUVs and trucks. Inspiration for the design draws from the Lunar Rover and older 4x4 vehicles.
