The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has announced the imminent launch of the Aliro standard in the first quarter of 2026. This development marks a significant step towards universal compatibility for smart locks and digital keys, enabling smartphones and wearables to function seamlessly as access credentials.
Aliro standardizes NFC tap-to-unlock and UWB hands-free unlocking, features previously confined to specific platforms. This open standard, backed by major tech companies including Apple, Google, and Samsung, alongside leading lock and chip manufacturers, aims to extend these capabilities to all users, regardless of their device's operating system.
Unlike existing solutions, Aliro facilitates direct, secure, and offline communication between a user's device and the smart lock, eliminating the need for apps or cloud connectivity. This ensures functionality even without an internet connection, offering a user experience akin to traditional keys.
