Amazon has released an overhauled Alexa Home Map, transforming the app's interface into an interactive 3D representation of users' properties. This upgrade provides a more dynamic and visually engaging way to manage smart home devices.
The new Alexa Home Map offers a comprehensive view, extending beyond the interior to incorporate exterior elements through compatible Ring cameras. It visually animates device statuses, such as colored glows for active lights or dancing music notes over speakers. The system also displays real-time animations for detected external movements, like people or cars nearby.
Setting up the interactive 3D map requires users to scan their home's interior layout. This process, which takes approximately 15-20 minutes, necessitates an iPhone with a LiDAR sensor for accurate mapping, although Amazon is developing video-based scanning for other devices. Users then drag their connected devices onto the generated 3D model.
The upgraded map is slated for a preview rollout later this year across various Amazon devices and apps, including the Alexa app, Ring app, Fire TV, and Echo Show devices. Amazon is also planning themed visual modes for upcoming holidays.
