28 Jan
Summary
- Prime members are being automatically updated to the new Alexa+ AI.
- Alexa+ offers AI-powered conversational responses and a new voice.
- Users can switch back to the original Alexa voice if they prefer.
Amazon has begun automatically upgrading all Prime members to its new AI-powered Alexa+ voice assistant. This rollout, initially part of an Early Access program, now includes all Prime subscribers, regardless of prior enrollment.
Alexa+ is designed for more conversational interactions and functions akin to a chatbot, offering a text-based chat interface on devices like Echo Show. A notable change is its new default voice, which some users find distinctive.
This enhanced Alexa+ is also accessible via Alexa.com, aiming to compete with services like ChatGPT. While this browser access is free for Prime members, the assistant is still under development and not yet as capable as its competitors.
Users who prefer the original Alexa experience can switch back, though the original voice may have also undergone subtle changes. Amazon has stated that notifications about the upgrade were sent through various channels.
