ALBATROSS Drone: Aerial Launch, Ocean Sail
11 Oct
Summary
- Drone launches from aircraft, lands gently on water.
- It converts from a descending craft to a sailing vessel.
- The drone boasts a range exceeding 100 km without engines.

Engineers from Singapore University of Technology and Design have unveiled ALBATROSS, a novel drone designed for aerial release and controlled ocean landing. This 1.1 kg prototype employs a unique rotating descent, significantly slowing its fall to enable a gentle water impact without specialized landing hardware. Upon reaching the water, ALBATROSS automatically rights itself and transitions into a sailing mode, utilizing wind power for propulsion.
The drone's innovative design allows it to be deployed from aircraft or UAVs, offering an operating range exceeding 100 km, a substantial improvement over existing systems like SailMAV. This capability is particularly advantageous for rapid deployment in environmental events. ALBATROSS distinguishes itself by integrating aerial and aquatic functions without requiring aerial propulsion or complex mechanical reconfigurations during its transition from air to water.
This wind-powered approach eliminates the need for onboard engines for surface travel, reducing hardware requirements and operational complexity. Unlike larger sailing drones that may require shore-based management, ALBATROSS can sail back to shore independently. The success of this concept hinges on consistent performance in descent, self-righting, steering, and sailing.
