AI's True Bottleneck: Data, Not Just Compute
30 Apr
Summary
- Agentic AI needs data infrastructure, not just processing power.
- Two-thirds of enterprises experiment with AI agents, but few scale.
- 80% of companies cite data limitations as the primary obstacle to scaling AI.

The current fervor around AI centers on massive investments in compute power, essential for training and running AI systems. However, the critical, yet often neglected, factor for scaling agentic AI is robust data infrastructure. While two-thirds of enterprises have explored AI agents, fewer than ten percent have achieved significant scalability.
Agentic AI requires seamless access to organized and accurate data across various enterprise systems. Unlike simpler AI tasks, these agents must autonomously locate and utilize data to complete complex workflows. Failure to address data infrastructure challenges, such as inconsistent data across platforms and poor cross-system operability, prevents widespread AI adoption.
Many industries face significant data integration barriers. While some sectors like finance and telecommunications are scaling AI due to mature data infrastructure, others like construction and accommodation are hindered by a lack of basic digitization. Policymakers and CEOs must prioritize data infrastructure and governance alongside tool procurement for successful AI deployment.
