AirPods on Android: You Lose the Smart Stuff
25 Oct
Summary
- Most smart features of AirPods are inaccessible on Android devices.
- Manual Bluetooth pairing is required for AirPods on Android phones.
- Third-party apps can restore some functionality on Android.

While AirPods can be paired with Android devices as standard Bluetooth accessories, a significant portion of their intelligent functionality is reserved for Apple's ecosystem. Connecting AirPods to an Android phone requires a manual Bluetooth pairing process, bypassing the seamless one-tap connection offered with iPhones. Crucially, features such as Siri integration, automatic device switching, ear detection, Spatial Audio with head tracking, and the Ear Tip Fit Test are unavailable.
Furthermore, essential functions like firmware updates and the Find My tracking service are also dependent on an Apple device. Apple indicates that firmware updates occur automatically when AirPods are charging and near a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device. Without an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, users would need to visit an Apple Store for updates.
Some Android applications, like CAPod and the more advanced LibrePods, aim to restore certain lost features, including battery pop-ups and ear detection for automatic playback control. However, these require specific app installations and, in some cases, a rooted Android phone or a particular operating system version. These third-party solutions offer a partial workaround, but the full AirPods experience remains tied to Apple devices.
