AI Stories Fool Readers: Human Touch Devalued?
5 Aug
Summary
- AI stories rated higher in quality and engagement by readers.
- Readers preferred stories labeled human, despite AI's quality.
- Expertise with AI, not fiction, aids in distinguishing AI writing.

New research indicates that artificial intelligence can now produce short stories perceived as superior to those written by humans. A study published in Judgment and Decision Making found that adult participants rated AI-generated stories as more absorbing and of higher quality. Despite this, when participants were told a story was human-authored, they rated it more favorably, hinting at a preference for perceived authenticity.
Interestingly, the study revealed that participants struggled to differentiate between human and AI-written narratives. In some experiments, accuracy in identifying the author fell below chance. Expertise with AI systems, rather than fiction, was found to correlate with an ability to recognize AI's distinct writing style. Researchers suggest that while AI excels at readability, human authors continue to write for self-expression and to process experiences.
