New AI Learns Weeds Instantly for Farmers
2 Feb
Summary
- AI model recognizes plant species instantly, eliminating retraining time.
- 150 million photos trained the AI, operating on over 100 farms.
- Farmers can now identify new weeds in real-time for robot removal.

Carbon Robotics has unveiled a powerful new AI model, the Large Plant Model (LPM), designed to enhance the capabilities of its autonomous weed-killing robots. This advanced model can instantly identify plant species, a significant leap from previous systems that required lengthy retraining for new or varied-looking weeds. The LPM is powered by an extensive dataset of over 150 million photos and data points, gathered from the company's robotic fleet operating on more than 100 farms across 15 countries.
This groundbreaking technology means farmers can now designate new weeds for removal in real-time, a capability previously unavailable. The LPM's deep understanding of plant structures allows it to recognize plants it hasn't encountered before without new labeling or retraining. Carbon Robotics, founded in 2018, has been developing this AI since shortly after beginning machine shipments in 2022, leveraging CEO Paul Mikesell's expertise in neural networks. The new model will be deployed to existing systems via a software update, empowering farmers with intuitive control over weed management.
