AI Bills Explode: Predictability Lost
21 Sep
Summary
- 60% of companies find AI initiative costs unpredictable.
- Most AI investment, 64%, goes into software and applications.
- Token costs are hard to forecast, unlike traditional software.
Enterprise software budgeting has shifted dramatically with the advent of AI, moving from predictable subscription fees to unpredictable token-based costs. A survey of 107 senior leaders found that 60% of companies report unpredictable cost trajectories for their AI initiatives, a concern at a time when financial leaders are demanding clear ROI.
Most AI investment, 64%, is channeled into software, applications, and API models, reflecting a focus on specific business solutions rather than infrastructure. Unlike traditional SaaS models with per-seat licenses, AI's token-based pricing for autonomous agents scales with usage, making forecasting difficult and leading to significant cost surprises.
Despite the financial unpredictability, AI is seen as a productivity booster by many. However, equating token consumption directly with productivity is a common misconception. Instead, focusing on outcomes, task completion, and cycle-time compression offers more meaningful metrics than raw token counts.
Regulatory compliance is also impacting AI adoption and costs, as ensuring AI safety and adherence to governance requirements necessitates more computational overhead. Managing token costs remains a paradox: while many understand how to reduce them through prompt engineering, only about a third of companies effectively control these expenses in practice.
