- Scammers now use AI for realistic video calls and fake brands.

Generative artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the landscape of internet scams, rendering old warning signs like typos and accents obsolete. Sophisticated AI tools now enable criminals to produce flawless text, create seemingly legitimate websites, and generate realistic digital avatars, making fraud detection increasingly challenging.
Last year, cybercriminals defrauded Americans of nearly $21 billion, with about $893 million directly attributed to AI-driven schemes. Security experts advise a paradigm shift from identifying bad indicators to actively verifying legitimacy, as scams now mimic well-known brands and impersonate individuals with alarming realism.
Social media platforms face mounting legal complaints for their role in disseminating scam ads. Meta reported removing 159 million scam ads and 11 million fraudulent accounts in the past year. TikTok also stated it proactively removes a high percentage of violating content before user reporting.
AI enables highly personalized scams, including 'catfishing' with realistic video and voice impersonations during calls. Scammers can leverage publicly available information to impersonate family members, asking for money via AI-simulated video calls. Experts recommend establishing secret codes with loved ones to verify identities during uncertain calls.
Deepfake technology, powered by AI, is also used to create fake celebrity endorsements for nonexistent products or phony investment schemes. Victims clicking on these ads or falling for fake celebrity appeals have lost significant amounts of money, highlighting the need to trust only official sources.
Fake online stores, like those selling discounted branded goods, are prevalent on social media due to AI's ability to create convincing storefronts. Scammers target users by advertising on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, leveraging the same ad-targeting tools as legitimate businesses. Verifying store legitimacy through web searches and AI-powered detection tools is crucial.
