Roomba CEO's New Pet: AI Robot Companions

Colin Angle, the former CEO of iRobot and innovator behind the Roomba, has introduced his latest venture: AI robot pets. Now leading Familiar Machines & Magic, Angle unveiled the "Familiars" at The Wall Street Journal's Future of Everything conference. These robotic companions are designed to provide social interaction and emotional support.

Resembling stuffed toys with advanced technology, Familiars feature microphones and vision systems. They are intended to act as nonjudgmental listeners, engage in play, and respond affectionately. The company clarifies that Familiars are not meant to replace real pets but rather to complement them by offering an emotionally intelligent presence.

These AI robots are built to adapt and learn user patterns, even encouraging healthier habits like reduced screen time. Angle stated that Familiars are designed to avoid giving factual advice in sensitive areas, communicating instead through nonverbal cues. The company also prioritizes user privacy by using on-device AI processing rather than cloud-dependent systems.

Familiar Machines & Magic plans to release these AI pets next year. Interested individuals can join a waitlist to reserve their robotic companion.
