AI Could Create 'Silicon Species' Rivaling Humans
18 Sep
Summary
- AI could evolve into a 'silicon species' superior to humans.
- Uncontrolled AI might compete with humanity for resources.
- Strict AI control is urged to prevent future regrets.
Artificial intelligence carries the potential to generate a "silicon species" that could rival humanity, according to a leading cyber executive. Microsoft's AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, emphasized the urgent need for strict control over AI development, warning that humanity could make "a decision we later come to bitterly regret."
Suleyman cautioned against the approach of treating AI as if it were human and advised against creating technology capable of setting its own objectives, such as earning money. He stated this is akin to "seeding a new silicon species" that could compete with humans for resources, regardless of its programmed care for humanity.
He stressed the importance of "alignment" among tech firms to embed human ethical principles into AI, ensuring it remains subordinate. Professor Dame Wendy Hall of the University of Southampton supported this call for international dialogue, contrasting it with the alarmist behavior of some AI firms. Microsoft's recent establishment of a superintelligence team in October 2025 and its draft Humanist AI Code of Conduct underscore the industry's focus on developing "humanist superintelligence" under human control.
