AI Boosts Individual Output, Not Company Profits
10 Oct
Summary
- AI enhances individual productivity but not always company profits.
- Companies struggle to translate AI gains into overall output increases.
- Despite usage, many firms see no significant change in employment.
Artificial intelligence is enhancing individual employee productivity, but these gains are not consistently translating into benefits for the companies employing them, as noted by McKinsey.
Eric Kutcher, chair of McKinsey North America, stated that significant increases in output from AI are not being observed across most industries. He explained that employees are changing their tasks rather than generating entirely new output. Companies attempting to leverage AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude are often focused on usage metrics without accounting for associated costs.
McKinsey data from August indicated that 80% of respondents felt AI increased their productivity. However, the percentage of employees who believed AI contributed to company profits remained stagnant at 37% compared to the previous year. Earlier studies, including one from the National Bureau of Economic Research, surveyed executives across the US, UK, Germany, and Australia, finding that over 90% of firms reported no change in employment or productivity over the past three years despite AI usage.
Despite current limited impacts, businesses remain optimistic about AI's future potential. Executives anticipate a 1.4% productivity increase and a 0.8% output rise over the next three years, with 75% of businesses expecting to adopt AI technology within this timeframe.
