Summary
- Startup aims to build AI with understanding and memory.
- Yann LeCun believes world models are key to true AI.
- Funding secured over $1 billion at $3.5 billion valuation.

Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), a new Paris-based startup cofounded by Meta's former chief AI scientist Yann LeCun, announced Monday it has raised more than $1 billion. This significant funding, which values the startup at $3.5 billion, was co-led by several prominent investors. LeCun, a pioneer in AI, argues that current large language models (LLMs) are insufficient for true human-level intelligence.
AMI's mission is to build AI systems capable of understanding the physical world, possessing persistent memory, and exhibiting reasoning and planning abilities. LeCun believes this focus on "world models" is essential for advancing AI beyond the current LLM paradigm, which he has openly criticized for its limitations. The startup plans to collaborate with companies in sectors such as manufacturing and biomedicine.
LeCun's venture represents a strategic departure from the prevailing trend of scaling LLMs. He contends that while LLMs are useful for tasks like code generation, they will not lead to genuine human-level intelligence. AMI, with global offices planned in Paris, Montreal, Singapore, and New York, aims to develop and license its AI technology to enterprises, a business model he found incompatible with Meta's consumer focus.
