Yann LeCun, a prominent AI researcher, has launched a new startup named Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), securing an impressive $1.03 billion in its first funding round. This initial investment values the nascent company at $3.5 billion. AMI, headquartered in Paris, has attracted significant backing from major tech entities including Nvidia Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., alongside prominent global investors.
LeCun, a celebrated figure in AI known for his foundational work on modern AI techniques, aims to develop artificial intelligence systems that are more adept at navigating the physical world than current large language models. He departed from his role at Meta Platforms Inc. in 2025, becoming a critic of LLM-centric AI advancement. AMI's objective is to create a universal intelligence system applicable to diverse fields such as domestic robotics and autonomous vehicles.
The startup is deliberately avoiding a Silicon Valley base, which LeCun describes as being "LLM-pilled." Instead, AMI will concentrate on research and development throughout 2026, with plans to collaborate with major enterprises, particularly in industries requiring AI for physical goods like automotive, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals. AMI also has offices in New York, Montreal, and Singapore, with a current staff of approximately 20 individuals. LeCun highlighted the potential advantage of a global reach, positioning AMI as a non-American, non-Chinese AI technology provider sought by industries and governments worldwide.
