AI Neckband Turns Neck Moves Into Speech
25 Apr
Summary
- Wearable neckband translates neck muscle movements into speech.
- Device aims to restore speech for individuals unable to talk.
- Achieves 85.8% accuracy on a limited set of 26 words.

A groundbreaking AI-driven wearable neckband developed by researchers in South Korea can translate neck movements into speech. This innovative device is designed to give voice back to individuals who have lost their ability to speak normally. By tracking a 'movement map' on the neck, the system interprets intended words without requiring vocalizations.
The AI algorithm converts these muscle and skin movements into speech, with the potential for personalized speech synthesis training. Professor Sung-Min Park highlighted its wide-ranging applications, including assisting patients who have undergone laryngectomies and enabling communication in noisy environments or for silent conversations.
While the technology shows promise, it currently achieves 85.8% accuracy with 26 predefined words and drops to 39.72% when the wearer is moving. However, it performs well in noisy conditions, recognizing words amidst 90-decibel background noise. The system is less bulky than existing brain-wave-based thought-to-speech technologies, making it a more portable and accessible option.
