While SynthID shows promise, it is not a foolproof solution. Other watermarking efforts, like Meta's Content Seal, have proven less resilient to simple edits like cropping. Furthermore, concerns exist about potential adversarial attacks aimed at bypassing SynthID. Google acknowledges that SynthID is not a silver bullet and is working on improving access and interoperability for verification tools, which are currently fragmented and have usage limitations.
Ultimately, the proliferation of open-source AI models means that not all AI content will be labeled. Experts suggest focusing on verifying authentic content rather than solely on detecting AI. Technologies like the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) offer cryptographically secure metadata to prove content origin, a more promising approach for ensuring truth in an era of unlimited synthetic media.
