Musk: AI Means Jobs Optional
16 Mar
Summary
- Andrej Karpathy rated 342 US jobs on AI exposure from 0 to 10.
- Digital, remote jobs like software development scored high AI exposure.
- Elon Musk predicts AI will make all jobs optional with universal income.

Andrej Karpathy, a researcher with Slovakian-Canadian ties, recently developed a system to assess the impact of artificial intelligence on various professions. His project assigned an AI exposure score from 0 to 10 across 342 job categories listed by the Bureau of Labour Statistics. Professions like software developers, mathematicians, and graphic designers, which are largely digital and can be performed remotely, were rated highly exposed. Conversely, roles such as construction laborers, janitors, and home healthcare aides received scores indicating minimal AI exposure.
Karpathy subsequently removed the data, characterizing the project as a brief, 'vibe-coded' effort that was being "wildly misinterpreted." The findings nonetheless prompted a notable reaction from Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk reiterated his long-held view that artificial intelligence will eventually render all human employment optional, ushering in an era of universal high income. An Anthropic report also highlighted that professionals most susceptible to AI displacement are often older, more educated, and higher-paid.
